Bartow, Florida.

Bartow is the Polk County seat and it holds one of the better collections of late nineteenth and early twentieth century domestic architecture anywhere in central Florida. That is the whole reason to treat a Bartow listing differently. The historic districts around the courthouse carry substantial Victorian, Queen Anne and early Colonial Revival houses with wrap porches, turned posts, bay windows, leaded glass, tall ceilings and original heart pine, on generous lots under a canopy of live oak that in places closes over the street entirely.

Those houses are demanding and they are routinely photographed badly. The window openings are small by modern standards and the porches are deep, so the interiors run several stops below the exterior and the original detail, the wood, the mouldings, the stair joinery, the mantels, is exactly what disappears first into shadow. This stock needs bracketing and flash as a matter of course, and it needs a lens and a working distance that respect rooms proportioned before open plans existed. A wide-angle exaggeration ruins a period room faster than it ruins a modern one.

The canopy is the other constraint. On the historic streets the front elevation has a narrow early window before dappled shade crosses the facade, and the difference between a photograph taken in that window and one taken at midday is the difference between a house that looks cared for and one that looks patchy.

Away from the districts, Bartow is a working town with phosphate heritage, a straightforward mid-century and postwar stock, and newer construction at the edges. The Peace River, the courthouse square and the airport are the landmarks, and the older streets are the premium.
